speaking for israel

During my tenure as Israel’s UN speechwriter, I saw the collapse of four Middle Eastern states, faltering Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, waves of Palestinian terrorism, stop-and-go nuclear negotiations (culminating in the Iran Deal), an attempt to push Palestinian statehood through the UN Security Council, the Palestinians’ bid to join the International Criminal Court, the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers, and fifty days of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Speaking For Israel describes my time as Israel’s UN speechwriter, and offers an honest, humorous, and frank look at how the Israeli delegation—and Israel as a whole—is treated and viewed in the international body.

“If you want to be a fly on the wall in the most challenging diplomatic battlefield in the world, Aviva Klompas welcomes you into the craziness of cross-culture, meets language barrier, on the complicated floor of the United Nations. In a day and age when the war of words dictates perceptions and misconceptions, the United Nations is the ultimate boxing ring, and Aviva Klompas was the woman of many words in the corner of Ambassador Ron Prosor. The trip through her term as the speechwriter is a graphic representation of the challenges Israel faces every single day, on the diplomatic front, on the media front, and online. Speaking for Israel is a must-read for understanding Israel's contemporary diplomacy.”

- Peter Lerner, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired), Former IDF Spokesperson
